LAKE CITY, Fla. (WCJB) - Almost two months after a fire destroyed the homes of more than 50 families in Lake City, one mother and her children are getting back on their feet and will soon have roof over their head. Permanently.
Around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27, Olivia Hayes was shaken out of her bed by her daughter, as smoke filled their apartment.
A fire claimed the homes of more than 50 families at Cedar Park Apartments in Lake City.
All were safely evacuated from the building, including 37 children, but Hayes and her two daughters lost everything.
As she recounted the horrors of the fire, she packed because it was time to go to yet another hotel, but it’s the last time she’ll have to do so.
