Expect to hear the crack of gunfire in the weeks ahead. Early muzzleloader season for deer opens in Virginia November 1 and modern firearms season opens November 15. Before you get out into the woods, hunting experts say it is a good idea to visit a shooting range to fire your gun to make sure the sighting and scope are correct, and to make sure your firearm is in good working order.

"You want to know how it hits before you get out into the woods," said long-time hunter Randy Frango as he readied a muzzleloader to fire at a target. "We're going to put it on a target and be shooting at a hundred yards."
