SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Springfield Police Department has issued a warning to residents about a phone scheme involving requests for donations to a 'grant for the elderly.'

The scheme involves callers using the name of Police Superintendent Lawrence Akers to solicit donations. Neither Superintendent Akers nor the Springfield Police Department is associated with these calls.

Residents who receive such calls are advised to hang up immediately. If anyone falls victim to the scheme, they are encouraged to file a police report with the department. The police department's warning aims to protect residents from falling prey to fraudulent schemes.
