More than three years ago, the Detroit Red Wings said it fired Zamboni driver Al Sobotka after he was caught urinating in a drain at work. Sobotka, who had the job for 50 seasons, insists he was fired due to age discrimination. He was fired in 2022 at age 68.
On Tuesday, a Wayne County Circuit Court jury in downtown Detroit, after deliberating about an hour, voted 5-2 against Sobotka, saying the Red Wings were justified in firing him and did not discriminate based on age, Tresa Baldas of the Detroit Free Press reports . A unanimous verdict is not required in a civil trial.
"I'm shocked and disappointed," Sobotka said, according to the Free Press.
