UK householders are being told "now is the time to act" as they face the financial headache of higher energy costs this winter. Many people may already have started turning on their central heating as the weather gets decidedly chillier.

The Ofgem price cap has gone up to £1,755 from October 1 just as we move towards the months of highest energy consumption, meaning bills will be pushed up even further.

The cap represents the average annual bill for a dual-fuel household paying by direct debit if you're on a standard variable tariff. But people are being urged to fight back against the new increase by looking at switching to a cheaper fixed rate.
