A non-league footballer has been slapped with an FA fine typically reserved for Premier League stars, after confessing to placing nearly a thousand bets on football matches throughout his decade-long career .
However, James Byrne's knack for outsmarting the bookies saw him pocket almost £50,000 over the years - leading to a fine equivalent to his winnings.
The hefty fine of £48,388.66 is thought to be the largest ever imposed on a player in Step 4 of the English non-league pyramid system. It stands in line w
