One of the most significant events in earth’s history was the Permian Triassic age mass extinction – when nearly all life on the planet was eradicated. The Guryul Ravine in Kashmir contains fossil records of that cataclysmic event. Recognising its scientific importance as one of the world’s most complete records of the “Great Dying”, the Geological Survey of India (GSI) has declared the Guryul Ravine Permian–Triassic boundary section as a national geo-heritage site.

The announcement was made on Thursday to mark the 9 th International Geo-ethics Day, where GSI Director General Asit Saha and senior officials signed a resolution formalising the declaration. The Orbicular Granite in Pichhore, Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh, was also designated as a national geo-heritage site during the same event
