BIRMINGHAM, Ala. − One of the LSU women’s basketball team ’s returning guards spent most of her time last season on the wing.
Now, Kailyn Gilbert is trying something new.
Coach Kim Mulkey said Wednesday at SEC media days that the senior is playing point guard in bits of preseason practices, as the No. 5 Tigers try to figure out which guards will begin the year as their new primary ballhandlers.
“She wanted a shot at that,” Mulkey said.
LSU had two lead point guards last season.
Shayeann Day-Wilson started 21 games at that position, and Last-Tear Poa started 15. Both moved on after the year ended, leaving as part of a roster churn in which Mulkey and her staff brought in eight new players, and now the Tigers are left with four or five guards who can handle the ball.
