There were further protests against the government in Ecuador's capital on Wednesday, despite Indigenous leaders in the north of the country agreeing to ease tensions which broke out due to an increase in diesel prices.

Clashes between protesters and law enforcement broke out in the area surrounding the Central University of Ecuador, in downtown Quito.

Some protesters entered the campus, where tear gas and rocks were exchanged with officers.

In the north of the country, Indigenous leaders demanded that the government punish those responsible for the deaths of two protesters, provide support for the injured, drop the legal cases against community leaders and withdraw the police and military who had arrived in the province in recent days.

Earlier, some 500 people attended the demonstration called by the United Workers' Front and related organizations such as the Federation of University Students of Ecuador. They reject the government's economic measures, such as the elimination of the diesel subsidy.
