James Franklin is out. Former Penn State captain Terry Smith is the program’s interim head coach.
The struggling 3-3 Nittany Lions must deal with a challenging schedule that includes dates at Iowa and Ohio State and home matchups with Indiana and Nebraska.
More losses are coming.
Smith, the PSU cornerbacks coach at the start of the season, is tasked with improving the Lions’ effort and morale in the short term.
Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft is heading up the coaching search to find Franklin’s permanent replacement.
Smith will be considered for the job, Kraft said earlier this week.
But this will be a national search, and Kraft is going big-name hunting.
