WASHINGTON — The U.S. has dropped out of the top 10 list for countries with the most "powerful" passports, according to the latest ranking from the Henley Passport Index.

The passport index, launched in 2005, assesses nearly 200 countries based on the number of destinations their passport holders can visit without a visa. The index ranks countries according to data from the International Air Transport Association and is updated monthly.

In July, the American passport ranked in 10th place, tied with Iceland and Lithuania, and fell from its previous 2024 standing of 9th place.

And in October's update, the U.S. exited the top 10 list, dropping to 12th place alongside Malaysia. The drop is quite remarkable, considering that the U.S. ranked at No. 1 in both 2006 and 2014.
