NEW YORK CITY, New York — A new investigation by Consumer Reports has found that many popular protein powders and shakes contain levels of lead that exceed what experts consider safe for daily consumption.

Consumer Reports tested 23 products and discovered that more than two-thirds had lead amounts surpassing its benchmark of 0.5 micrograms per serving, with some exceeding that limit by more than tenfold.

Plant-based powders were the worst, averaging nine times more lead than dairy-based options and twice as much as beef-based products, according to Consumer Reports. Naked Nutrition’s Vegan Mass Gainer and Huel’s Black Edition topped the list, containing 7.7 and 6.3 micrograms of lead per serving, respectively, levels the non-profit says warrant complete avoidance.
