The lawsuit, filed on October 10 by Laquesha L. Habersham on behalf of her minor child, alleges that Master Sergeant William P. Squires launched an "unprovoked assault" on several teenagers who were lawfully walking along a street.

Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner announced at an October 3 press conference that Squires had been fired from his position, saying he was "appalled" by the incident.
