CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — As traffic crashes remain a leading cause of death for young people, the West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote safe driving habits during National Teen Driver Safety Week, set for Friday, Oct. 19, 2025, through Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025.
Traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for 15- to 20-year-olds. The latest federal data shows that in 2023, 2,611 people died in crashes involving a teen driver aged 15 to 18. Fatalities included 822 teen drivers, 604 passengers of a teen driver, and other roadway users. Of the passengers killed, 377 (62%) were other teenagers riding with a passenger vehicle teen driver.
