When most people think of Studio Ghibli , titles like Spirited Away or My Neighbor Totoro instantly come to mind. But hidden in the studio’s vast library is Ronja the Robber’s Daughter , a quiet masterpiece that was doomed from the start. Released in 2014 as an Amazon Prime exclusive, the series had all the heart and artistry of classic Ghibli, but almost no one knew it existed.
Adapted from Astrid Lindgren’s 1981 novel ( Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter ), the show brought together Goro Miyazaki’s delicate direction and Studio Ghibli’s storytelling magic. Yet, despite its impressive pedigree, Ronja received virtually no marketing or promotion from Amazon. What could have been a defining family adventure was instead left to gather digital dust on a forgotten streaming page.
