GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The federal government has been shut down for more than two weeks. And now, food assistance for millions of Americans is on the line.

In Grand Rapids, one nonprofit that supports people with mental illness and homelessness said nearly all their clients could lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ( SNAP ) benefits if the shutdown continues.

For many, losing SNAP benefits could mean losing their only source of food.

“I don't know how to tell them that, hey, that card that you have that you get all of your food from, that's not going to work next month,” said Executive Director of nonprofit, Servants Center, Abbie Stoppa.

Across the country, SNAP could soon run out of funding.
