A University of Michigan regent spoke out Thursday against the university's decision to end gender-affirming care for minors at its hospital system during the board's monthly meeting.

Regent Paul Brown, a Livonia Democrat who is running for reelection in 2026, raised the issue after a parent of a transgender child called the decision "cowardly" during the public comment portion of the meeting that was held in Flint.

Brown, who said he had a family member who is also a transgender child, said he agreed with the parent's frustration.
