KEWANEE, Ill. (KWQC) - A Chicago-area man is accused of scamming an elderly Kewanee woman by impersonating federal Treasury officials and threatening criminal charges if she didn’t send money.
He was arrested in a sting where officers delivered the money Wednesday, according to a media release from the Kewanee police.
Police began investigating after a woman told police she’d been contacted by people who claimed to be agents with the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
Police said she withdrew a large amount of money and gave it to the scammers.
Peoples National Bank staff contacted the Kewanee Police Department on Tuesday after noticing similar suspicious activity involving the woman, even though the original withdrawal didn’t happen at their bank, officials said.
