A government shutdown has left federal accountant Mike Daugherty without a paycheck after his previous protection was removed.

The Daugherty family is simultaneously coping with severe family medical crises, including Mike's wife Shayna being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer and their special-needs son suffering a seizure.

The family is relying on community support, church aid, and a GoFundMe to cover expenses, which include a recent emergency surgery, hospital bills, and a broken-down family SUV.

Happy sounds still come from Mike and Shayna Daugherty’s home in the middle of shutdown hardships.

Mike has worked as an accountant for the Department of Defense for the last 15 years. He was protected in the last shutdown, but not this time.
