MAUI, Hawaii (Island News) -- The Maui Police Department (MPD) has two new police dogs in the department, specialized in de-escalating dangerous incidents and safely arresting suspects.

The K-9s Maka Ihe and Ku Makanai are joining MPD to serve as “less-lethal tools” to locate armed or concealed suspects, reduce the need for deadly force and minimize potential harm to both officers and the public.

These K-9s are certified in apprehension, narcotics detection and explosives detection making them a first-of-a-kind for MPD. They were chosen for their outstanding temperament, drive and intelligence, which are critical assets for K-9 operations.

These apprehension canines are both Belgian Malinois, Maka Ihe is 27 months old and Ku Makani is 20 months old. Both new recruits were born in Hungar
