The sanitation system in Chhattisgarh's capital has come to a standstill just days before Diwali, as hundreds of sanitation workers went on strike demanding a pay rise and fulfilment of pending assurances.

More than a thousand sanitation workers employed under the Ramky Group, the private company contracted by the Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) for door-to-door waste collection, have halted work and gathered at Dal Dal Sewni to protest, as per a report by IBC24.

The primary demand centres around a salary hike, among other issues listed in a five-point charter.

As a result, garbage collection across residential areas has stopped, and waste piles are visible in several parts of the city.
