Regional public toilets are among the oldest, least handicapped-accessible and heavily vandalised facilities in NSW, according to a parliamentary report.

Tweed Shire mayor Sue Cherry told ACM regional councils needed financial support. Her council area on the NSW North Coast has 62 toilet blocks and many are "ageing and in need of an upgrade".

"A few years ago we did want a public toilet strategy but unfortunately, a recovery from floods got in the way," she said.

"I particularly like that they understood local councils don't have the money to do this kind of upgrade and we need help from the state government."
