Auston Matthews scored 58 seconds into overtime Thursday night and the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the visiting New York Rangers 2-1.

The Rangers had control of play for the first 50 seconds of the OT period before Matthews scored his team-leading fourth goal on a 2-on-1 break with William Nylander.

It was the second straight win for the Maple Leafs, who along with the Rangers played their first overtime game this season.

Matthew Knies also scored and Nylander had two assists, though goaltender Anthony Stolarz was the difference-maker for Toronto, stopping 28 shots.

Juuso Parssinen scored for the goal-challenged Rangers, who had been shut out in their two previous games. Igor Shesterkin made 22 saves for New York.
