OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Classrooms and hallways at Fairfield High School look a lot different this year.

Senior Dain Burkhart is one of the many students adjusting to the new law that bans students from using their phones during instructional time.

“Last year I probably pulled it out every 15 minutes to look at it, help me with a problem that I could have used my computer for and then that would turn into looking at something else and before you know it, I’m wasting 20 minutes of my time doing nothing,” Burkhart said.

Since the Fairfield school district implemented the change, students have noticed an environmental shift.

“A lot of chatter, it’s not a lot of kids sitting there like this walking through the halls which yeah it’s good to see younger classmen talking to older people,” said
