HOUSTON, Mo. (KY3) - A long-awaited recreation center project in Houston is moving forward after the city officially purchased land this week, six years after voters approved a one-cent sales tax to fund parks and recreation improvements.
The 2019 sales tax measure allocated funds for various park improvements, including repairs to the city’s pool, which were completed quickly.
“Our city pool was in need of repair, and that was done pretty well immediately. I think it was done in 2020 if I remember correctly,” Mayor Sam Kelley said.
The proposed recreation center faced delays as city officials worked to secure suitable property for development.
This week’s land purchase represents the second attempt at finding an appropriate site for the project. The city initially bought land in 2021
