The UK Government has confirmed that shops and businesses in England are under no obligation to accept Scottish banknotes as payment for goods or services. According to the Treasury, legal tender status “does not oblige businesses to accept a particular form of payment in everyday transactions”.
Treasury Minister Lucy Rigby explained that it “remains the individual retailer’s choice whether to accept or decline any form of payment, including cash or card, based on their consideration of factors such as customer preference and cost”.
Her comments came in a written response to Lib Dem MP Angus MacDonald, who asked what steps the Treasury is taking “to ensure that Scottish banknotes are treated as legal currency by businesses operating in England”.
