When you ask someone to describe Thomas “Pop” Sadler, you are likely to hear words like leader, father figure and best friend, coupled with a fond memory and interspersed with laughter.

For Thomas, community was everything. It’s why the Sadler home in Charlotte’s Greenville neighborhood became a hangout spot for so many children.

Maybe it was the haunted house in the backyard during Halloween. Or the visits with Santa around Christmastime. Or was it the 4th of July cookouts? Whatever it was, he didn’t come to be known in the community as “Pop” without having an impact on young lives.

Thomas Sadler died on Oct. 12, surrounded by family members who vow to keep his 75-year legacy alive.
