Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of the Million Man March, held on Oct. 16, 1995, and organized by Minister Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Nation of Islam.

I was there. And for those who weren’t, this is how it went down.

The march was a call for Black men everywhere to demonstrate unity, self-improvement and atonement. At no time in American history had that number of men assembled for a humanitarian cause.

Six coworkers and I made the 200-mile drive from New York to Washington, D.C. Held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on a crisp Autumn day, the event was more of a gathering than an actual march.

Sons, fathers, grandfathers — and even some single mothers with their boys — were in attendance. Menfolk from all over the country, and some from outside the United States, all came in harmony
