According to the farm’s website , “ the situation began on December 10, 2024, when a three-year-old ostrich showed pneumonia-like symptoms.” This occurred after a group of wild ducks had visited the farm which has a small pond. Over the following month, many more ostriches became sick and nearly 15 per cent of the whole flock died (69 of 468 ostriches). The owners reported calling a veterinarian, but the veterinarian did not come to examine the ostriches or take any tests.
It was not until December 28, that an anonymous person, concerned about seeing dead and dying birds on the property, alerted the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) about the situation.
