41 people died due to a stampede at actor Vijay's rally in Karur on September 27.

The Election Commission told the Madras High Court on Friday that actor Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), is not a recognised political party. TVK does not fulfil the necessary conditions to become a recognised state party.

Before the bench of High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Srivastava, ECI's lawyer Niranjan Rajagopal said that to get recognition at the state level, a party needs to secure at least 6% of valid votes and win two assembly seats or one Lok Sabha seat.

The court made these observations during the hearing of petitions that sought to declare TVK nullified or unrecognised and to add additional sections to the FIR against Vijay for the Karur rally incident.
