A semi-autobiographical movie from an American auteur tops the DVD releases for the week of Oct. 21.
“The Shrouds”: Criterion Premieres release of David Cronenberg’s 2024 film centered on a tech entrepreneur (Vincent Cassel) grieving his wife who invents a system that allows people to monitor the decaying corpses of their interred loved ones in real time.
Also starring Diane Kruger and Guy Pearce.
“As grim as it sounds, ‘The Shrouds’ is often quite funny, and playful in how dark it’s willing to go,” writes The Detroit News critic Adam Graham in his review. “And its text is rich with references to Cronenberg’s life, both personal and professional: His own wife died of cancer in 2017, and a character is talked about as having ‘made a career out of bodies,’ much like the director himself.”
