HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) - The Buddy Walk in Tampa is breaking its own record for fundraising and number of participants.

The 9th annual event raises awareness about Down syndrome. With the help of 850 participants, organizers say they surpassed their $80,000 fundraising goal.

The money helps provide programs and resources for individuals with special needs. Ashley Odom, a member of FRIENDS Down Syndrome Special Needs West Florida, said, "No words can describe the support and love the community has for individuals like my son. The money that we've raised, we can do so much more next year."

The Buddy Walk is scheduled for Saturday at Carrollwood Village Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community members can register online or at the event.
