Driving past Armuchee High School on Monday morning, commuters will see what appears to be a plane crash on campus with emergency services on the scene, but fear not — the commotion will be part of a disaster simulation held by Floyd County Schools in partnership with local emergency service agencies.

Starting at 9 a.m., volunteers and emergency agencies, such as the Rome Floyd Fire Department, Floyd County Police Department, Floyd County Emergency Management Agency and Floyd County 911, will simulate a plane crash and fire to practice the protocols each department has in place.

The disaster scenario involves a plane taking off from Richard B. Russell Regional Airport, only to encounter birds in the air and experience engine failure. The plane will then “crash” into Armuchee High School
