BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A man living in the Lafayette area is now facing federal charges after being accused of assisting in the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, according to newly unsealed charging documents.

Federal prosecutors alleged Mahmoud Amin Ya’qub al-Muhtadi provided, attempted to provide, or conspired to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, namely the National Resistance Brigades.

That group operates as a paramilitary group in Gaza and has fought alongside Hamas, according to federal court documents. It is an arm of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine which prosecutors allege has direct ties to Hamas.
