State officials on Thursday touted a crackdown on the so-called “street takeovers” that have unfolded in and around Boston in recent weeks, prompting concern about public safety and drawing a recent rebuke from President Trump.
Governor Maura Healey sought to reassure residents that the state’s ongoing law enforcement efforts are working. She said state and local agencies worked together last weekend to disrupt potentially unruly gatherings that were being planned on social media.
Officials said the coordinated response effectively prevented more car meetups like the ones on Oct. 4 and 5, when large crowds shut down roadways and drivers performed stunts, doing burnouts and spinning doughnuts. At a gathering in Boston’s South End, a police car burned after being hit with fireworks
