This week, West Midlands Police announced that away supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv would not be permitted to attend their UEFA Europa League match against Aston Villa in Birmingham. For the first time in modern British football, a police force has decided that Jewish fans, because that is what most Maccabi supporters are, will not be allowed through the turnstiles.

It is a decision that should chill every decent person in this country. Because this is not just about football. This is about what kind of nation we are becoming.

Now, for the first time, we have decided that one set of supporters must be excluded because of who they are and the team they support. Because they are Israelis. Because they are Jews.
