Prince Andrew has announced he will relinquish all his titles and honours, including the Duke of York, following ongoing controversies linked to the Epstein scandal. This decision comes just days before the release of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre, who alleged she was a victim of sexual abuse and received a substantial settlement from Andrew in a civil case. In a statement from Buckingham Palace, Andrew revealed that the decision was made after discussions with King Charles and other family members. He stated, "The continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the royal family." Andrew emphasised his commitment to his family and country, saying, "I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life. With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me." Despite giving up his titles, Andrew will retain his status as a prince, a title he has held since birth. The dukedom of York, which can only be removed by an Act of Parliament, will remain with him, but he will not use it. Additionally, he will forfeit his knighthood as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) and his role as a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. Virginia Giuffre's memoir, titled "Nobody’s Girl: A Memoir of Surviving Abuse and Fighting for Justice," is set to be published soon. In the book, Giuffre describes her experiences, including an alleged encounter with Andrew when she was 17, after being trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein. She claims that Andrew expressed gratitude in a "clipped British accent" following their encounter. Giuffre, who passed away in April at the age of 41, completed the manuscript shortly before her death. The book is expected to provide new insights into her time with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, as well as her interactions with Andrew. Publishers have indicated that the memoir contains "intimate, disturbing, and heartbreaking new details" about her experiences. This latest development marks a significant moment in the ongoing scrutiny of Prince Andrew's actions and their impact on the royal family.
