DES MOINES, Iowa ( WOI ) - Former Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts has now been federally charged with one count of false statement for employment, court documents show.

A grand jury says Roberts lied on his I-9 submitted as part of his hiring process for Des Moines Public Schools in 2023.

The jury says Roberts said he was a U.S. citizen “knowing he was not in fact a United States citizen.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Roberts on September 26. Department of Homeland Security said officers found a gun, a knife and $3,000 in cash in a district vehicle he was driving.

Roberts had been charged with possession of a firearm as an illegal alien on Oct. 2. Court documents say he may have possessed four different firearms.
