MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) -- Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris has declared a local state of emergency for the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare of Memphis residents.

Harris said local governments and law enforcement agencies have seen an increase in law enforcement activity and have been told to expect increased arrests at nearly 200% of current daily rates.

According to the declaration, this comes after President Donald Trump issued a Presidential Memorandum on Sept. 15 called, "Restoring Law and Order in Memphis." Trump and Gov. Bill Lee have since deployed federal law enforcement officers, creating the Memphis Safe Task Force.
