Growing up in Shaker Heights, Kitty Dubin had no plans to pursue playwriting as a career.

After graduating from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1967, Dubin taught English at Greenview Junior High in South Euclid for two years. At 24, she moved to Detroit with her husband, it was difficult then to find a job teaching English there.

“I was advised to get my master’s degree in English, and that would be helpful in getting a job,” Dubin told the Cleveland Jewish News. “So, I went to Wayne State University, and one of the classes I took was playwriting.
