TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Georgia’s deer firearms season starts on October 18 and state’s Department of Natural Resources is encouraging extra safety.

DNR is encouraging hunters who harvest deer in Berrien, Lanier, and Lowndes Counties to get them tested for Chronic Wasting Disease.

DNR is working with taxidermists and processors around the state to sample deer for free.

Self-serve freezers will also be available. Submit the deer’s head, leaving at least four inches of neck. Fill out the sample information tag and put the head in another provided bag. Seal the bag and place it in the freezer. A new bag and tag must be used for each deer.

Test results may take 2-6 weeks to be available, and hunters whose deer test positive will be notified.
