WASHINGTON — Google's autonomous vehicle company Waymo will not launch its driverless rideshare service in D.C. as early as planned after congressional budget cuts eliminated funding for a critical safety study, derailing the District's timeline for approving the technology.
DC Councilmember Charles Allen, who chairs the Council Committee on Transportation and Environment, said he will not move forward with legislation to legalize the self-driving rideshare service until the District Department of Transportation completes a study on how the autonomous technology would work on D.C. streets.
"If we're talking about vehicles driving around our streets without somebody behind the wheel, we want to make sure we get it right," Allen said.
