BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Students from the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired are learning to navigate the busy streets of downtown Baton Rouge as part of their orientation and mobility training.
LaRonda Doakes, an orientation and mobility instructor, guides visually impaired students through real-world experiences on city streets, helping them build confidence through independence.
“For me it is the greatest when I have my kids graduate and go on and they call and say, ‘oh Ms. LaRonda, I just wanted to call and let you know I moved into a new area and I pulled up that map like you told me and I was able to get to my job on my own, 2nd day out,’” Doakes said.
