Texas (KWTX) - Central Texas homeowners could save hundreds of dollars on property tax bills if voters approve raising the homestead exemption from $100,000 to $140,000.

Tax assessors across the area already sent out bills assuming voters will approve the measure. When officials raise the homestead exemption, it lowers how much of a home’s value is taxed, resulting in cheaper bills for homeowners.

Tax experts say they have never seen residents vote against saving money on property taxes.

Potential savings vary by county

McLennan County Tax Assessor Collector Randy Riggs said homeowners in his county could save $200 to $300. Coryell County Tax Assessor Collector, Justin Carothers estimate residents could save $300.
