APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The American Cancer Society says over 300,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. But this month is also about making sure women know how they can prevent getting the disease.

Meet Angela: she started getting her mammograms at 40.

“The first two were negative or clear,” said Angela de Moraes.

Although she never felt a lump on her own, her next mammogram showed three benign - or non-cancerous - lesions. When she turned 45, they ended up finding something suspicious.

“A lump that developed in my right breast that hadn’t been there prior,” said Angela.
