If there's one type of jewellery that has captured the imagination of people more than anything else, it's the tiara.

And nothing says 'royal' more than a glittering diamond headpiece, especially when that piece is made by Cartier which was famously called "the jeweller of kings and the king of jewellers" by King Edward VII.

Tiaras have long held a special allure amongst the public, and their royal wearers, and soon 20 of the world's best are coming to Australia.

"Tiaras indicate a certain level of social status and we are all fascinated by royalty and celebrity," Helen Molesworth, senior curator of jewellery at the world-renowned Victoria & Albert Museum, tells nine.com.au from her office in London.

By design, tiaras are meant to enhance the status of those lucky enough to wear one.
