When Hazel Trembath Elementary burned down two years ago, it left a hole in the Port Coquitlam community.

Now that hole will be filled, with the school rebuilt, after approval of $39 million for construction of a new 240-student elementary school on the same site, the B.C. government has announced.

Construction is expected to start in July 2026, with occupancy scheduled for December 2027.

The building will use hybrid methods — 10 classrooms and main areas will be built using prefabricated construction, while the gym will use conventional construction methods. It’s a first for the province, and will allow the school to open at least a year earlier than if conventional methods had be solely employed.
