NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is warning people about rabies after a cat tested positive for the virus in Norfolk.
The domestic shorthair, described as a "free-roaming brown tabby," was reportedly demonstrating "aggressive" behavior on Oct. 10. It was picked up on Wellman Street in Norfolk's Glenrock neighborhood.
The cat was euthanized and sent to the Virginia Department of Consolidated Laboratory Services for testing, and on Friday was confirmed to have been a positive case for rabies.
Health officials said human exposure to rabies happens when the saliva of an infected animal enters the body through an open wound or mucous membrane, such as an animal bite. They are asking people to contact the Norfolk Department of Public Health if a cat matching their descri
