LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A celebration turned chaotic during a high school soccer game between two longtime rivals when a bleacher railing collapsed, injuring six students.

The incident happened Thursday night just moments after St. Xavier High School clinched a dramatic double-overtime victory against Trinity High School in a regional soccer matchup held at Waggener’s newly renovated Wildcat Field.

According to St. Matthews Mayor and fire department spokesperson Rick Tonini, the collapse occurred when excited students rushed to greet the victorious players after the game.

“The players ran over and when the students came to greet them, the force against the railing gave way,” Tonini said. “The people in the stands fell forward on top of the players underneath them.”
