Health workers are on their toes in Hooghly’s Polba block after four cases of chikunguniya have been detected over the past week. At least 30 others have shown symptoms of the disease, spread by mosquitoes, and await confirmatory blood test results.

The Polba gramin hospital has seen a rush of people suffering from sudden fever, accompanied by severe joint pains and, in some cases, muscle pain and headaches as well. Initial tests for dengue and malaria have turned out negative, and the Block Medical Officer of Health, Dr Kaushik Mondal, said blood samples were collected again, this time to test for chikungunya.
